Security telemetry is the automated collection and transmission of security-relevant data from across an organization’s IT infrastructure, including endpoints, networks, cloud environments, applications, and identity systems. It provides the raw data that feeds threat detection, incident response, and risk management.

Unlike traditional logging, which captures events after they occur, security telemetry delivers a continuous, real-time stream of information about what is happening across systems right now.   • Volume: A mid-sized organization can generate terabytes of telemetry daily. Storing, processing, and analyzing this volume creates significant cost and infrastructure demands. Tiered storage strategies, intelligent filtering at collection points, and selective retention help manage costs without sacrificing investigative capability.
  • Noise: Not all telemetry is equally valuable. Attackers deliberately blend malicious activity into normal operations. The signal-to-noise ratio determines whether security teams find real threats or drown in false positives. Correlation across multiple telemetry sources is the most effective way to separate genuine threats from benign anomalies.
  • Context: Raw telemetry lacks business meaning. A failed API call is just data until it is connected to the application it targets, the sensitivity of the data involved, and whether the caller should have had access. Enriching telemetry with architectural context, such as which components are internet-facing, which handle sensitive data, and who owns them, transforms raw data into actionable intelligence.
