Security telemetry is the automated collection and transmission of security-relevant data from across an organization’s IT infrastructure, including endpoints, networks, cloud environments, applications, and identity systems. It provides the raw data that feeds threat detection, incident response, and risk management.
Unlike traditional logging, which captures events after they occur, security telemetry delivers a continuous, real-time stream of information about what is happening across systems right now. It is the foundation that enables detection and response. Without telemetry, security teams operate in the dark, discovering incidents only after significant damage has occurred.
As environments grow more distributed and attackers become more sophisticated, the quality and coverage of an organization’s telemetry directly determines how fast it can detect threats and how effectively it can investigate them.
Telemetry in software and infrastructure environments comes from multiple layers. Each source provides a different lens on security-relevant activity. Common sources include:

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different things within the security data pipeline.

The distinction matters because organizations that focus only on alerts miss the broader context that raw telemetry provides. Alerts tell you something happened. Telemetry tells you why, how, and what else was affected. Effective vulnerability management lifecycle programs use telemetry to connect detection findings to remediation workflows, tracking issues from discovery through resolution.
Telemetry cybersecurity challenges differ across cloud and endpoint environments, though both share the core problem of scale.
In cloud environments, the challenge is coverage and format consistency. Each cloud provider uses different logging formats, APIs, and retention policies. Multi-cloud and hybrid deployments multiply this complexity. Ephemeral workloads like containers and serverless functions generate telemetry for only seconds or minutes before terminating, creating gaps if collection is not continuous and automated. Cloud audit logs (AWS CloudTrail, Azure Activity Log, GCP Cloud Audit Logs) are essential but often lack application-level detail without additional instrumentation.
On endpoints, the challenge is depth versus performance. Capturing every process execution, file access, and network connection provides the richest forensic data, but generates enormous volume. EDR (endpoint detection and response) platforms balance this by focusing collection on high-value events and using behavioral models to flag anomalies. The rise of eBPF-based instrumentation has improved kernel-level visibility with lower overhead, particularly in Linux and container environments.
Across both environments, SaaS applications represent a growing telemetry gap. Many SaaS platforms provide limited audit logging, and organizations have minimal control over what data is collected or retained. This creates blind spots in identity-centric attacks that traverse SaaS boundaries.

Effective security telemetry programs focus on collecting the right data from the right sources, enriching it with context, and enabling rapid analysis, rather than simply maximizing volume.
Context and correlation. Telemetry becomes actionable when enriched with business context, correlated across sources, and filtered to surface genuine anomalies rather than raw event streams.
Poor quality telemetry, including incomplete data, inconsistent formats, or missing fields, undermines detection models and produces false positives. High-fidelity telemetry from critical sources improves detection precision.

Use tiered storage: keep recent data immediately accessible for real-time analysis, move older data to cheaper storage for investigations, and archive long-term data to meet compliance retention requirements.
